STONE

This challenge has been completed. This page has been archived, with access provided for completeness. Thank you for your interest.

The winning entries are captured in a piece called Breaking the Stony Silence.

GANTOB loves to set challenges. And she loves to see the responses to these challenges.

In the process of writing the second book she set the Brent Goose Rock challenge. Both the solutions and the process of crafting the prizes generated some unexpected and original art. And then of course there was the skateboard art and Skellbert’s Pickles’ lentil and bottle top adornments to some Curt Finks sketches. They all featured in the second book.

For 2024 GANTOB has set what she thinks is her most devilish task so far.

In GANTOB’s Kompanion Volume there is mention of a drystone dyke story by Curt Finks. GANTOB and her husband Ali (Curt’s son) think it is a Curt Finks original, based on Finks Sr’s diary and documentation around his travels from The Photographer. Ali has put the words into little paper bricks (or stones if you would prefer) so that you can reconstruct the story, in the manner that his Dad appears to have intended it.

The challenge is to rebuild the wall, placing them in order, stacked up into a wall. You decide how to do it. You’ll need some good scissors, accurate cutting, and experiments in the best type of glue. If you object to the longer words spilling over onto other faces of the stones then you can make your own using the template stone, which you can extend to your requirements (once you have created your new longer stone, you will of course have to shrink it down to match the neighbouring stones’ height). If you cannot read the handwriting then use a word that fits in with the story.

As you will no doubt want to do this in installments, the deadline for the task is 31 March 2024. After that point the evenings will be getting lighter and if you’re anything like me you’ll not want to waste your time on such endeavours. Email your photos of the completed wall, stacked up to the height of at least 5 stones along its length, to 100percentvinyl2@gmail.com.

The prize will be a sculpture that will include the story and an original piece of GANTOB art. There could be more than one winner. Good luck!
