I have to be very careful with “what ifs”. If I’m not in a strong frame of mind they lead on to “cudda, shudda, didnae” and deep self recrimination. That’s not productive, We can’t change the past and we can’t afford to carry others tragedies as our own. We owe it to ourselves to strive to be happy, or at least content.
I think the best we can do when playing the “what if” game is to learn from them, then try to spot the same situations when they next arise and do things differently. It’s never easy but it’s better when you don’t play the game alone.
